Southern Tree Hyrax

Dendrohyrax arboreus

A rabbit-sized, thick-furred relative of the elephant that lives in tree hollows and comes out at night to browse leaves. Its screaming, rattling calls after dark are one of the eeriest sounds of Nairobi's forests, and it is far more often heard than seen. Daytime sightings usually catch one sunning at the mouth of its hole.

Did you know?

Hyraxes are the elephant's closest living relatives, sharing tusk-like incisors and similar foot structure.
