Muhugu

Brachylaena huillensis

A slow-growing hardwood with a fluted trunk and leaves silvery-white beneath. Its dense, aromatic wood was so prized for carving that Muhugu has been cut out of much of its range; the old trees of Karen and Oloolua are among the survivors.

Did you know?

Most of the wooden animals sold in Kenyan curio shops were once carved from Muhugu.
